Description

In this lesson, students are introduced to the various types of prototyping so they may see how designers make designs “come alive” and are able to get constructive feedback before subsequent iterations. The lesson explains the levels of prototyping and describes some common types. Then, students have a chance to practice some rapid prototyping and share the “story” of their design using the different methods.

Type: Activity Duration: 30 minutes Grade Levels: Grade 6, Grade 7, Grade 8, Grade 9, Grade 10

Objectives:
  • Define “prototype” and the role of prototyping in the design process
  • Describe the different levels of prototyping (low fidelity, medium fidelity, high fidelity, live)
  • Explain the connection between prototyping and storytelling
  • Explain the connection between prototyping and iteration
  • Describe visual thinking techniques used by designers and engineers
